So what are the golf courses in Phuket like?
Loch Palm Golf Course
The Loch Palm Golf Club course has forgivingly open fairways but has the add ed challenge of being built around a beautiful lake area. It’s certainly not an easy round of golf but it’s a lot of fun!
The fairways on Loch Palm may very well be a little more open than some of the other golf courses in Phuket but the well-placed mounds and bunkers will keep your game honest. The fairways tend to slope down towards the lake also, something worth noting when you’re lining up a shot.
The undulating greens will reward your precision with a putter, and with all the natural exposure they get from the tropical sun, the greens run quick and true – unless, of course, you’re playing after a heavy bout of rainfall.
Red Mountain Golf Club
Located on the site of a former Tin Mine, Red Mountain Golf Club features winding canyons and an impressive landscape that has stark changes in its elevation throughout the course. Perhaps the best example of this is at the Signature Hole 17 that boasts a 150m drop from the Tee Box down to the green. Its narrow fairways favour a straight hitter and the greens run true throughout.
Red Mountain is a challenging course but certainly one we’d recommend that you experience. After a solid round of golf, you can also sit on the veranda of the clubhouse and marvel at the beauty of the course itself with a cool drink in hand.
Blue Canyon Golf & Country Club
Located just 15 minutes from Phuket Airport is the Blue Canyon Golf & Country Club. It features two award-winning courses, both of which rank as some of the best golf courses that Phuket has to offer. The course itself is a challenging one and of championship calibre. It’s been host to numerous regional and international golf tournaments from across the globe.
A great claim to fame of the Canyon Course is having a young Tiger Woods cement his golf legend status in 1998. During that particular golf round, Tiger became the first person in history to ever hit the green in one on its 13th hole. It’s since been referred to by the locals as “The Tiger Hole”.
The Lakes Course is challenging in its own right but it does offer you a slightly more relaxing round of golf and of course, stunning views.
Mission Hills Phuket Golf Resort & Spa
Designed by Jack Nicklaus, this 6,806-yard tournament course is located on the scenic northeastern coast of Phuket. The area is surrounded by rubber estates and mangrove swamps and from the resort, you can enjoy stunning sea views that span across the Phang Nga Bay. A truly mesmerizing view!
Don’t let all that stunning scenery take distract you from the task at hand though, because this course is a great challenge with many noteworthy Pars. For example, the 5th Hole is 537 yards in distance and its narrow fairway will test the accuracy of your long game. The island green will also put the precision of your short irons to the test.
Seven of the holes feature water hazards on them and the wind that comes off the bay will be an ever-present threat to your iron game.
Phuket Country Club
This is the oldest golf course in Phuket and is easily accessible as it’s situated in Kathu, just a short 15-20 minute drive from Patong Beach. Phuket Country Club has hosted many National Tournaments and yet remains an attractive location for golfers with high handicaps due to its wide and forgiving fairways.
The main hole that everyone seems to talk about after completing a round of golf at the Phuket Country Club is the 10th hole. It’s a 557-yard, par 5 hole that has a dog-leg right angle that snakes around an enormous lake. This is a hole that if you are confident in your golf game, is a reachable one!
For those that just want to have a “quick round” of golf, the Phuket Country Club also has a 9 hole course at Par 36. This is located just across the street from the entrance to the Old Course. It’s still a great challenge if at only 9 holes with 5 tee boxes per hole, and if you feel like you want to go around the course again, you can always approach each fairway from a new perspective.
It may only be 9 holes, but it is still a challenge, and with 5 tee boxes at each hole, if you feel like going around again, you approach each fairway from a new perspective.
The Laguna Phuket Golf Club
Previously known as The Banyan Tree Golf Club Phuket, the now named Laguna Phuket Golf Club has received various awards for both its clubhouse facilities as well as its course. Paul Janse undertook a major renovation and redesign project spanning over 2 years which, when it re-opened in 2015, instantly propelled Laguna as one of Thailand’s elite golf courses.
The layout of this huge 6,756-yard course is a truly challenging experience and yet still very playable for golfers of all handicaps. There are two distinct scenic experiences in the landscape of this wonderful course. The front nine holes have a lush tropical foliage setting while the back 9 holes have coconut groves and well-designed sand bunkers.
The coconut groves, lagoons and undulating fairways, not to mention the lush greenery of the Phuket mountains, really combine to make the Laguna Phuket Golf Club a simply idyllic course to play on.
The golf course itself is part of the rated 5 Star Laguna Resorts complex, which is located in the Bang Tao area of Phuket. This is one of the extremely popular high-end residential communities on the island.
Katathong Golf Resort & Spa
If you take just a short trip to the north of Phuket, near Kao Lak, you’ll find the Katathong Golf Resort & Spa. This is a fairly newly opened Championship course that’s set amongst some truly stunning tropical landscaping and dazzling mountain scenery. Katathong is truly a sanctuary for golfers that specifically come to the island of Phuket to enjoy the numerous golf course, but at Katathong, they end up leaving with a much deeper respect for nature.
Being set at the site of a former Tin Mine and much like the course at Red Mountain, the course has undulating hills, a beautiful reservoir and well-placed sand traps and flow over the natural contours of the land. With the abundance of natural streams and waterfalls in the area, you will get to enjoy the sound of cascading water and chirping birds during your playthrough.
The clubhouse has been designed using a Sino-Portuguese architectural style and has been decorated with Mining memorabilia. From the fairways, you can still see authentic rusting relics of the previous Tin mine that used to be in the area.
Mini / Crazy Golf in Phuket
Last but not least, if you’re on holiday with little ones they’ll surely want to do something fun and that doesn’t involve sitting in the sweltering heat, 40-foot putts, divots and fishing lost balls out of the water or Jungle, then Phuket’s Mini / Crazy Golf scene is for you!
There are a couple of options for this with the Dino Park Mini Golf in Kata and Mini Golf in Patong. The Dino Park features an authentic 18 holes with lots of replicas of prehistoric creatures for the young ones to enjoy. Each hole blends further into the dinosaur theme and offers lots of different views of the prehistoric world.
The Mini Golf Patong is located at Banana Walk Beachfront mall in Patong and is on the rooftop, a great place to enjoy a bit of sun as you play. The 18 hole course has a tonne of fun themes and obstacles throughout the course like water hazards, crocodiles and rocks. A great time to play up there is early evening as you can get to enjoy the sunset as you play.
