The Beaches at Kata and Kata Noi

One of the best things about buying property in Kata is the beaches that are located in the area. Kata Beach is one of Phuket’s most attractive, with fine powdery sand that contrasts with the island’s other beaches. Kata, like many Phuket beaches, is fringed with Casuarina trees, which provide plenty of shade. Early in the morning, when local fitness fanatics may be seen strolling the beach from end to end, Kata seems to come alive.

In the peak season, the two capes protruding out at each end of the beach assist to keep the waves calm, and the island immediately off the northern end (known as Koh Poo, or “Crab Island”) adds to the picturesque splendour.

Despite the fact that the region is popular with tourists, Kata Beach appears to be rather calm. The beach’s center, at Club Med’s beach entrance, and the ends, where snorkeling is popular, are both very busy, although you can generally find a huge stretch of sand to yourself.

The snorkeling is excellent here, particularly near the rocks on the beach’s southern end. One of the local dive schools may also be bringing students out for a beach dive on the northern edge.

Kata Beach is especially lovely in the off-season, when there are less visitors yet it still has its allure. During the low season, it’s also popular with surfers, and Kata is host to Phuket’s annual surf competition.

Kata Noi is substantially smaller than its bigger counterpart next door (Noi literally means “little” or “little” in Thai) and has an entirely different vibe. It’s a lovely tiny harbor just south of Kata’s main beach, surrounded by mountains and tropical flora. A tiny rocky headland can be found at each end of the beach, making it another great spot for snorkeling.

Restaurants and Dining in the Kata Area

The beaches aren’t the only thing that draws visitors to Kata. Residents and visitors alike go to the restaurants and bars on the hill overlooking Kata Noi in the evenings. The view is breathtaking, and it’s easy to see why visitors who can end their day with such a view would come back to Kata year after year. It’s nearly ideal, and a fantastic spot for an evening beverage while watching the sun set over the horizon.

But superb cuisine and beautiful views aren’t limited to the hillside. On Kata Beach’s southern end, there are a variety of eateries just a few steps from the shore that are obviously popular with seafood aficionados.

The Boat House, a Kata landmark, is also located on the same stretch. It was once held by Mom Tri, but it is now in new hands, with the same high quality. Here you’ll discover a magnificent fine dining atmosphere with a view of Kata Beach, as well as one of the island’s greatest wine selections. The Kata Rocks resort, which also provides excellent gourmet dining, is not far away.

If fine dining is not your thing, there are plenty of other seafood restaurants in the region, as well as steakhouses, Italian, Greek, Turkish, and other foreign cuisines. A Wine Connection, with its famed Mediterranean menu, is also available.

On the Rocks (on the Kata end of Karon Beach) is one of the most romantic places. It’s a fantastic eating experience in a fantastic setting — a tropical setting high above the cliffs with a direct view of the Karon shoreline. You may eat delicious cuisine while listening to the waves gently breaking on the cliffs below.

Kata offers a variety of great pubs, as well as the Nui/Water Beach Club, which is one of Phuket’s most laid-back beach clubs. Keep a watch out for a little dirt road on the right as you drive south to Nai Harn, immediately after the viewpoint. This will get you to Nui Beach.

The island’s slightly rowdier nightlife is largely concentrated on Patong, which is only a short ride up the coast. Kata, on the other hand, generally has enough going on in the evenings to satisfy the majority of visitors, including plenty of live music.
